Teens and Addiction: A Few Things You Need to Know

Almost everyone goes through phases as teenagers where they might try drinking a beer or smoking a joint. This is certainly not a necessary experience that you need to have as a teenager, but if you are a teenager who has developed a drinking habit or a drug habit, it’s important that you are able to take a step back and have some self-awareness.

First of all, you are not alone. Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where more and more teens are developing problems with drugs and alcohol. The times we live in can be so stressful. It can also be difficult to be constantly connected with each other via the internet and cell phones. There is no sanctuary from the difficulties of being a teenager. More and more teens are turning to drugs and alcohol as a form of escape. For those who are genetically predisposed to addiction, it may be necessary to go to a rehabilitation program.

When it comes to asking for help, there is nothing to be ashamed of. You may think, “I don’t need to go to rehab. I’m just a teenager!” This is true. But it’s important that you ask for help now. The younger the better. If you discover that you have a tendency towards addiction as a teenager, getting help as early as possible can prevent addiction from ruining your life in your twenties or thirties.

Going to a rehabilitation program has other benefits, too, for teenagers. In a rehabilitation program, you will really work on your own self-esteem and self-worth. You will learn self-control, and you will learn how to value your own body in a way that a lot of people still don’t know how to do as adults. The earlier, you gain these strengths and principals, the better. You will be better prepared for the pressures of college and adulthood.

It’s good to get these issues under control now if you discover you are a teen who has a tendency to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. College can be a very crazy time if you are using drugs or drinking alcohol all through your college years. Learning how to abstain from being intoxicated is a great skill and behavior to develop.

Remember that there is no shame in seeking the help that you need. You want to find a rehabilitation facility for teens or you can even start going to 12-step meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous. The important thing to remember is that you are worth it, and your life is something you should value enough to want to take care of yourself.

Why It’s Important to Have Friends

As a teenager, it’s so essential to have a few really good friends (or maybe just one or two even). Someone who can accept you for who you really are. Someone who will not judge you. Someone who will be there for you. Being a teenager can be really difficult. You need someone who will always have your back.

Having a great friend is a truly amazing thing. Someone you can make playlists for. Someone you can sit around and have coffee with and just talk for hours. Someone who understands what you are going through and is going through some of the same things. Someone you can always rely on.

While it’s good to have friends who are like you, don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot have platonic friends of the opposite sex. It’s also really nice to have friends who have a slightly different experience than you do, whether that means they are of a different ethnicity or sexual orientation or they are disabled or from a different cultural background. Friends are great for doing things together, but friends are also great for teaching each other a little bit about their own lives and helping each other to grow into stronger people.

If you are a shy person and talking to people can be difficult, you should try and push yourself outside of your comfort zone enough to get to know people who seem nice to you. I guarantee you that you will not regret it when you make a good friend. Then you can have someone to go to the movies with or someone to sit with at lunch, someone to laugh with or dance with, someone to try new things with, someone to talk to when you are going through difficult things.

There are many different types of love. Good friends are like family, and the more love we all have in our lives, the better. This is why it can be so essential to make new friends. So if there’s someone who seems interesting in your Chemistry class and you’ve been meaning to ask her to hang out sometime, you should go for it. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.
